Please participate in an important cat behavior study

The ASPCA and People for Animals are working together on a study of cats’ behavior and appearance. The goal is to develop an accurate method of determining, when cats first arrive in an animal shelter environment, which are truly unsocialized with people and which are socialized with people but frightened in that environment. This information would help improve Trap-Neuter-Return services and reduce the unnecessary euthanasia of feral cats and frightened pet cats.

Your cat’s participation:

Cats stay for three days at the People for Animals clinic in a special room set aside just for them. Their behavior in response to people and to unfamiliar objects will be observed while each cat is living in its own standard holding cage containing a soft bed, a perching shelf, a litterbox, food and water. All cats will receive high quality, attentive care. All observations will occur before spay/neuter surgery and are not expected to hurt your cat in any way. A person cracking the cage door open then immediately closing it
An unfamiliar object hung on the front of the cage
Being petted gently through the cage with a rubber-tipped rod
A dish of food while a person stands nearby

After the three days of observations, your cat will be spayed/neutered as usual.

Requirements:

You’ll complete a questionnaire about the cat’s behavior in his/her normal environment
You must know the cat well to complete the survey, therefore:

Pet cats must have been in your home for the past 1 month or more
Free-roaming cats must have been seen regularly for the past 3 months or more

Cats must be healthy and 6 months to 10 years old
Cats must not be obviously nursing, pregnant or in heat
Up to 5 cats may participate per owner/caregiver

Walk for Paws Sunday May 6, 2012

Please join us on Sunday, May 6th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at Nomahegan Park on Springfield Avenue in Cranford (across from Union County College) as we Walk for Paws (Rain Date May 20th). All proceeds will be used to support our pet rescue and adoption programs as well as our low cost spay/neuter clinic.

Participants may start the Walk any time between 10 am and 1 pm. The Walk is approximately 2 miles in length. Refreshments will be served. You may attend with or without a dog. Each dog that attends will receive a doggie bag filled with goodies.

Contests

Contests for the dogs will be held at 11 am and 1 pm. The contest categories are:

Best Trick, Best Kisser, Fastest Tail Wagger, Highest Jumper, Shortest Dog, and Tallest Dog. Dogs may enter all contests, but may win only one. To participate in a contest, a dog must be registered for the Walk.

Every participant who turns in $100.00 or more in sponsor donations on the day of the event will receive a free People for Animals T-shirt. There will also be other t-shirts and animal themed merchandise available. In addition, the four top participants who turn in the most money in sponsor donations on the day of the event will each receive a $25.00 PetSmart gift card.

Pups On Parade, A Charity Walkathon

People for Animals will host, “Pups on Parade, a Charity Walkathon” on Saturday, October 22, 2011 at Mercer County Park in the West Picnic Area at 334 South Post Road, Princeton Junction, NJ from 10 am to 2 pm.

Participants may start the Walk at any time between 10am and 1pm. The Walk is approximately 3 miles in length and people may walk with or without a dog.
There is no minimum amount walkers must raise; however, the more money a walker raises, the more “goodies” the walker earns. Every registrant who turns in $100 or more in sponsor donations on the day of the event will receive a free People for Animals T-shirt. Each dog that participates will receive a Doggie Bag filled with goodies.

In addition, the four top “FUNdraisers” will receive $25.00 gift cards to Petco.

Costume Contests for dogs include Best Look Alike, Scariest and Most Original.

Help Sponsor PFA’s Casino Night

On November 5, 2011 People for Animals (PFA) will be hosting a Casino Night fundraiser as a means to finance our low-cost spay/neuter and pet rescue programs.

We need your help to fulfill our mission and make this event a success. We are requesting sponsorships or product donations that we may use for this event. PFA is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, and all donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law.

Your Support Will Enable People for Animals Spay/Neuter & Pet Rescue to:

Provide low-cost spay neuter surgery options to the general public, particularly low and middle income families
Prevent unwanted litters from suffering and death in NJ animal shelters due to lack of available homes
Offer additional services in Mercer County to make wellness, and low-cost surgery programs accessible to people living in this area of the state
Assist New Jersey animal shelters by fostering dogs or cats temporarily until they find a permanent home
